Hola Hola Hola My Beautifuls and a very Happy Halloween to all!!

Queee??  JU SO FONII!!!

Now you know BB's not going into the why, how, or shoulds of this very special day.
Of course it's a special day- Babushka gets to buy BAGS of caramelo at a discount, and if all goes well tomorrow they'll be 50% off.

Oh Si, a VERY special day.

La Gallina Vieja Flies Solo- Day 23 of SMCSF 30 day blog challenge

I know what you're thinking- especially if you did a Google translation. "Gallina Vieja"- Old hen, flies solo. Queee?? JU SO FONII!!! Now we all know hens don't fly. BB doesn't mean the literal translation. I mean old hen as in a woman of advanced years always pecking around and set in her ways. Ok si, in this case I'm specifically referring to MY Gallina Vieja, Sonia Guerra. Apparently she wants to do a little singing, solo,  because she says bailando is BB's thing, and she plans to use Feibu for her songs.  Her first official day is tomorrow, Halloween.   Ahuh, that joke is too easy so I'll just say this-

If La Gallina Vieja sees a stick she'll think of the Teddy Roosevelt quote,

"Speak softly and carry a big stick."

Whereas if BB sees a stick she'll yell,

Yes, you're right.

It's two sides of the same coin, and anyway you look at it,
it's still a treasure.

A Night of Firsts for BB & LatismSF - Day 20 of SMCSF 30 day blog challenge

When Babushka accepted this challenge I thought of all the pictures and stories I had waiting to be told from earlier in the year. Got a lot of 'em.  Seems like so much has happened since Hispanicize and the marvelous people and world I discovered there.  Case in point is Latism- Latinos in Social Media who tonight finished their yearly conference.  This year the conference was in Houston, Texas and I couldn't go, but I did get to go to the first EVER get together of the Latism chapter in South Florida. Oh yes I did- and I almost didn't make it.  You see, there was a storm...

May 10, 2010

Babushka usually uses public transportation in Miami, so Sonia, La Gallina Vieja doesn't like to be all "Babushkaized" while riding.  Thankfully she's outgrowing that silliness, but for this event she was going to do her Clark Kent imitation and had BB's hat, heels and blue eyeshadow in the Popa bag.  Upon arriving at the Lincoln Road Mall  Babushka was in for quite a shock.  The last time I was there it was a quaint little outdoor mall which catered to the older, mostly Jewish population of the area and though slower paced , BB always enjoyed going there- especially for the delis.

Bueno delis, make room for discos, 'cause this is the mall now!

Besides the shock, Babushka was battling the elements.  From out of nowhere a storm hit the city.  Ok si, it wasn't a tornado like we have Up North in The South, but it sure was close!  Sonia had to duck into store entrance to begin her transformation. Queee??   JU SO FONII!!!  No there weren't any phone booths, everyone in Miami has a cellular- and usually a smartphone at that.  Continuing.  Here's the first doorway I ducked into

Babushka now had her hat and heels, but there wasn't enough reflection so I moved to

and completed the transformation.

Ah yes, that was quite a sight- una vieja in a furry Babushka hat taconiando and running between empty shops trying to keep dry, not melt, and not be carried away by the wind or the men in the white suits.Thankfully, like most sudden rains in Miami, it lasted about 10 mins. Fast, Furious y Fuerte- typical Miami.

But all ended well.

I made it to the event, met a great group of people

AND-

at 11:42 pm I met today's deadline for the SMCSF challenge.

PicaPica's 6 and ready to party!- Day 19 of SMCSF 30 day blog challenge

Yesterday was the sixth birthday of  PicaPica, my son MAC's eldest son. And everyday he looks more and more like his dad. Oh si he does- even the XBox said so when it greeted my son while it was actually scanning PicaPica.  What's worse (better?) is that everyday he acts more like his dad too.  And better (worse?) is that MAC is incorporating some things I used to do to him.  Like:

Little Bro Rinquincaya is looking and hoping there's one for him too...

Birthday Wakeup Donut!!

Loved doing this for my trio- it always brightened everyone's day and started it off with smiles.  No tired sleepyheads on birthdays.  My DIL said they actually got up quickly and laughing!!

Rinquincaya showing how old HE is.

A day of laughter.

Rinquincaya y PicaPica

Now really, shouldn't that be what birthdays are all about?

Wedding- Time to get serious. Day 18 of SMCSF 30 day blog challenge

http://weddingnouveau.com/2010/03/wedding-inspiration-board-blue-green-yellow-bohemian-african/

Less than six months away, time to get serious .  Quee??  JU SO FONII!!!  Si, Babushka can be serious.  Bueno, Ok, not so much be serious as "taking things seriously."  And marriage I take seriously, I mean honestamente, it is my third...

Como saben, as y'all well know, My Capitan, Maria de los Angeles has been doing the honors of organizing the wedding.  She's looking for venues, sponsors, dresses, and doing the whole Social Media Event.  All suggestions/hookups/ideas are welcome and appreciated because she is one person handling a bigger than life persona.  (Who is soooooooo grateful.)  For my part, I am thinking about the wedding program, the words, the theme/tone of the day- of wedded life.  This was prompted by Adriana Iris, author of  La Dulce Vida ~The Sweet LIfe  and her marvelous line:

What says you My Beautifuls?  Do you agree with this?  Do we lose ourselves when we become "one" with another? Should we only give what we get?  What would you use as a quote? What should the program look like?

Y si, I want to hear from YOU, I am sharing the day with ALL of you.

Think of this as one big Cuban fiesta for the blogasphere.
Lively, loud, energized, passionate y very public- but not a media circus, no not a circus.

BB likes to think of it as a collaborative Conga line.

Fans Forever- The Sequel. With Actual Fans. Day 17 of SMCSF 30 day blog challenge

In actuality the title should be- My Last Day in Miami Part 3a Fans Forever  Day 17 of SMCSF 30 day challenge, but that would be too over the top even for BB.  Queee?  JU SO FONII!!!  Ok si, nothings too over the top for BB; I just like this title better.  And I like sharing better, especially when it's beauty. So, without further ado, my favorite fans from the Fans Forever exhibition currently showing at the Miami Dade College Museum of Art & Design.  Bueno, not all of my favorites because the lighting didn't always work well with my camera, but a lot of my favorites.  I could have scanned in the pics of my favs because of the marvelous book Mr.Jeremy M. Mikolajczak bestowed me, but that would have taken away the look of Plebian Pride Babushka so likes to compartir with y'all. Of course you have no idea what I'm talking about if you haven't read the first part.  Go on, it's here and we'll be here.  Heje  BB being BB and playing the tease again. But really, it does make more sense if you read the first part.  Ok, ok. Continuing.

From the introduction pages-

MORE THAN JUST SOME CUBAN FANS...

A fan is much more than a tool to cool oneself.  It is the means for a woman to say something special to a man.  Also, it is an object that, for its beauty, constitutes a work of art.  These days, fans are used less frequently than in the past, a sign of advancements fut also a reflection of the lack of gentleness and charm that surrounds us.

In 1943, the splendid Paris Church of Santa Maria del Rosario, a jewel of Cuban Baroque, held an exhibition and auction of fans to raise funds for the church's care and maintenance.  The event was memorable because of the quality of the works exhibited.  Almost seven decades later, with the title Fans Forever, today's exhibition not only recalls that event but also rescues the magic and beauty of the Cuban fans.

In this exhibition, we have fans painted by some of the artists who exhibited in that historic occasion.  Fortunately, we also have fans painted by artist of later generation, both on the island and in exile.  At a time when the world of creativity seems dominated by works that are primarily destined to oblivion, Fans Forever is a most appropriate title.  This exhibition is worthy of enjoyment and celebration.

Armando Alvarez Bravo

And now in no particular order, except the order in which they were photographed,
the Fabulous Fans Favored by this Fanatic

Descriptions taken almost directly from the book because they've said it all oh so well.

TONY LOPEZ  1918-2011

And So It All Began

One of his last compositions, filled with a marvelous tenderness and innocence: Adam and Even in Paradise.

MIGUEL ORDOQUI  1939

"colorful fictional characters, humor and sensuality"

PEDRO DE ORAA  1931

"Symbols of the inexhaustible mystery of the aesthetic genius."

CESAR SANTOS  1982

Cesar's artristic energy always inspires him to design figures and objets that are believable and convincing.

TOMAS SANCHEZ 1948

Tomas suggests that we look at others through nature, as a a fair way of looking at and respecting ourselves.

PEDRO PABLO OLIVA  1949

Sweet dreams, a large dose of humanity and a message of hope.

EMILIO SAUMA   1961

"with a brilliant explosion of blazing colors and beautiful silhouettes"

CARLOS ACOSTANEYRA  1962

"with his creative capacity, comes with fish and travelers, and with other elements that denote his arduous work."

ISMAEL GOMEZ PERALTA  1966

"fills a great void of remembrances and absences, rescuing the hopes that he immortalizes forever."

CARLOS ESTEVEZ  1969

"an artist of great spiritual and mystical gentleness, always engaged in an infinite quest across the universe"

ORESTES GAULHIAC  1960

" a painstaking composition by the artist, like his circus scenes, that he paints not as they truly are but as he interprets them."

ERNESTO CAPDEVILA 1970

His works, according to the artist himself, represent an unexpected path.
Lies and truths that bare themselves on the same stage.

Of course my Plebian photos can not compare to seeing the fans in person, nor the photographs in the book.  As a matter of fact, the pictures of the artists are also in the book, giving further glimpses into their souls, and they are works of art within themselves. BB wholeheartedly states you see the exhibition and/or buy the book- for the history, the beauty, and the art. Por supuesto y sin duda, I emphatically agree with Mr. Bravo-

"This exhibition is worthy of enjoyment and celebration."
