La Tata, Babushka’s 94 year old grandmother.

She took care of us for so many years, it’s only fitting that we now have the bendicion of doing the same.

“Nothing easy about getting older, and it’s even harder being old.”

This is a quote my grandmother would say, and knowing the life she has lead, BB believes it.  We all have had our trying moments, and we all know getting old is a privilege not all have, but it’s also a challenge to have all our needs met when we can no longer do it for ourselves.

When in Miami, Babushka would stay with La Tata. BB would always be sure La Tata was taken care of Mind, Body, Soul. A checklist with these headings as guidelines was used.

• Mind- daily card game, word search, conversation for at least 30 mins.
• Body- the menu of the day, since some days she didn't feel much like eating, always had fruits and a liquid meal replacement on hand.
• Soul- devotional readings, audio, and phone calls with the great-great grandchildren. Also, fresh flowers and plants helped her spirits.

It was nice to take her out and break up the daily routine. Unfortunately, because she would tire easily, we'd have to restrict our outings, but one of her favorite places to go to was Sam's Club. There we could get all we needed and many services too. PLUS she loves their pizza and would make sure we’d go around lunchtime. Every single time.

Part of La Tata’s frustration with aging was the incontinence and how it curbed her social life and outings. Fortunately she found the products which gave her back some of that freedom.

And of course that brightened all our lives immensely.

She especially likes Member’s Mark products, both the items AND the prices are BUENISIMO!!

We always have such a good time at Sam’s Club.

Ahora mismo, she’s recuperating from a broken hip bone, but we expect to take her again on outings soon.

La Tata is looking forward to visiting Sam’s club to save some money, spoil some children, eat some pizza and zip down those aisles in her electric cart yelling, “Aqui viene Fangio!” She may have lost some of her mobility, but her tastes, wit and preferences haven’t changed a bit.

Sam’s Club offers caregiving services, like health screenings and prescription refills, along with their own brand of health-related products. The Member's Mark Maximum Long Pads are perfect for LaTata. This way she can confidently take trips out of the house without having to worry about any incontinence issues. Por supuesto and of course we all know and love that monito who gets into everything, Curious George. But did you know that his creators have gotten into quite a few things themselves? 

 Husband and wife, Hans and Margret Rey, "from their escape from Paris on handcrafted bicycles hours before the Nazis seized the city, to the impact they had on the lives of children growing up in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire" have a tale just as exciting and enchanting as any of their Curious George books. Betcha didn't know that verdad? BB didn't either and was very happy and almost as curious as George when the makers of the documentary MONKEY BUSINESS: The Adventures of George’s Curious Creators, contacted Babushka. This is the email received:

About The Film:

"We are excited to announce that the world’s favorite curious monkey is celebrating his 75th birthday this year! Since the first Curious George book was published in 1941, the stories of the adventurous little monkey have sold over 75 million copies in more than 20 languages. However, the story of George’s creators is much less known. MONKEY BUSINESS: The Adventures of George’s Curious Creators explores the extraordinary lives of husband and wife Hans and Margret Rey, from their escape from Paris on handcrafted bicycles hours before the Nazis seized the city, to the impact they had on the lives of children growing up in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire.  Han’s and Margaret's experiences, creative spirit and resilient attitude sparked the iconic children’s character beloved by the world.

Despite the occasionally heavy subject matter, we aim to tell the  Reys’ story with a whimsical, optimistic approach. The documentary in its entirety is intended to evoke the feeling of reading a Curious George book. The film is brought to life through archival material and animated sequences, using audio and video recordings of Hans and Margret, including interviews from those who knew the Reys well.

Production of the documentary is close to completion and will be submitted to festivals, but we need your help! How could Babushka say no?? In BB's Bunch there are 5 generations of George Lovers, with Dr. J being the latest aficionado. To show amor and gratitude to George's creators seems the least one could do.

Cuando Babushka first heard of “Christmas in July” she thought it was the coolest thing ever!!  Y si, pun intended.  Why not cool off in summer and share gifts and good feelings mid year?? And what better way is there to cool off than with ice cream, and what is better at giving good feelings than baked goods-especialmente cookies y brownies!! Felizmente BB knew just where to get the mixes for those cookies y brownies, y pa' ya fui.

Being raised in Miami, by Cuban parents, our Christmases and Julys were usually very warm and tropical, so BB just had to combine both cultures, good 1st Generation CubanAmerican that she is. Therefore, Babushka’s contribution to this occasion is an ice cream cake, with brownies,cookie, and mango filling. BB feels the love and sees your smiles from here.

Ahora, like all good comida, the base has to be good, por lo tanto, non other than NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Baking Mix for BB. Porque you can’t beat the classics, but you can sure put a twist on them, and that’s exactamente what they did with these new desserts. So, considerando they’ve been doing the baking biz for 75 años, Babushka used their mix and expertise to help her make this twist on a classic too.

This is a 3 step ice cream cake with cookies, brownies, ice cream, mangoes y whipped cream.  The two mixes used were Nestle® TollHouse® Cookies & More w/Butterfingers and Brownies & More with chocolate Morsels. Y creame when BB says it took all her willpower not to eat the mix ins straight from the caja!!

RECIPE-

Ice Cream -Softened

Whipped Cream

Exact measurements? Now you know BB's a Cuban Grandmother so everything is "a la vista", pero appxs. Have been added in the steps.

Step 1- make the brownies and cookies. Cut the brownies in half/thin and crumble cookies.

Step 2- start layering the different ingredients.

Here BB took a brownie half then put appx 1/2 cup softened icecream then a crumbled cookie for each layer. The middle layer was enhanced with one mango slice cut into thirds. 

Make sure the bottom and top brownie layer are the flat halves of the brownies you made. Babushka used an 8x8 baking pan and from that made 3 individual ice cream cakes from 2 brownies that were sliced halfway, making it a 3 level cake. Had two levels of vanilla and one of chocolate. Also, to keep the layers together, a mini loaf pan lined with aluminum foil was used- it helps maintain the form as well as giving space to add more ice cream to the sides. You now put the cake into the freezer until it is completely frozen.

Step 3- Add whip cream around cake and decorate!!

So another full day of activities were planned for us, and Babushka's beginning to understand why she so loves living UpNorthInTheSouth.  They eat as much as Cubanos!!  Es mas, I'd say for breakfast they even beat us.  De veras.  Don't think that's possible?  Look at this menu- a whole side dedicated to desayuno. AND ALL OF IT GOOD!!!  No wonder they have more than one location.

One of the treasures of Tallahassee, The LeMoyne Center for Visual Arts was founded in 1963 to be a gallery of fine arts and to be a place for art education activities in North Florida.  Turns out, it's one of the top 100 art festivals in the nation! Housed in an 1854 Antebellum home, it houses a gallery, sculpture garden, and year long art classes.  PLUS members of BB's beloved TWAM have portrayed Jacques LeMoyne, the artist the center is named after. On the day we visited we enjoyed the "Side By Side" exhibit by Debby and Randy Brienen.

Listen to museum Director Ann Kozeliski as she shares the history and the current activities the center has, and how it's goal is "to get art into the hands of the people". The growing popularity and fama LeMoyne is having attests that they're doing it right!

Recognize the place in the painting?  Wakulla Spgs Lodge, de BB's home town.

And then Beautifuls, then came THIS.

That was Babushka's reaction when they said we were going to go on a Segway.
 To which BB said, "No way!"

Pero you know that's blah,blah, because Babushka will try anything once, twice to make sure...
but a little convincing did have to happen...



Some instruction via Tim Nettles, owner of Tallahassee Segway Tours gives a demo to calm our nerves.  The plan was to start at Cascades Park, then go to the Smokey Hollow Commemoration.

So... Did BB actually learn to ride a Segway??

Not only did she ride it Beautifuls, but was zipping all through Tallahassee turning heads!  This was one of the best tours, because not only did we see sights, we were quite the sight ourselves.  We covered a lot of ground in an hour. The Capitol, Railroad Square, College Town, and many other points of interest, all with fascinating facts shared by third generation Tallahassee Tim.  
Though it isn't strenuous, Babushka will stress that it's strictly a straight standing stance and you will feel it once you dismount. Would BB ride a Segway again?  JU SO FONII!!!  She's looking forward to it and is even organizing a publicity tour for TWAM on Segways.  They're fun, "get you around town" attention getters that everyone should try at least once.
