The End of an Era. @ConexionFlorida

`This is the article written for the December 2025 edition of Conexion.

With mixed emotions BB shares this one, but it is perfecto for this time of endings & beginnings...

HolaHolaHola Beautifuls!

Time to say Adios to this year and to get ready for the next. Hopefully learning from the past to bring freshness and freedom to the future. “Should Auld acquaintance be forgot”?  JU SO FONII !! Beautifuls, that’s part of life’s pleasures and ways. To remember with fondness, sometimes with cuidado, but to remember life’s moments. We remember momentos of la vida, both bueno and malo, to smile, to learn, to grow, to know. The birth of a loved one, the death of a loved one. The welcomes and the Goodbyes. Momentos of pleasure,  moments of pain. This is life, this is inevitable, this is how we must live, this is how we continue.

And so it is with this newspaper. December 2025 marks the last paper, handheld edition of Conexion. So many years in print, so many momentos and memories. Babushka for her part has a few boxed away for future smiles. Y si Beautifuls, there will be future smiles.  El Mundo has decreed electronic reading the way to go, and life continues, and we will adjust. The environment will lose less trees, the waste will be less, the cost to produce will definitely be reduced and the size of the publication will prosper. There will be good from this change. And there will be nostalgia. The end of the year is always a good time for both. Ribbons to go around the cherished and scanning to enter the new era. Hopefully we will be sure to do this to all aspects of our lives.

It's Been Six Months... Conexión 7/2023

This post is going to the presses in Conexión on exactly the 6th month of Sweetie's adios. But though he isn't physically on this plane, Babushka knows he's with her. More about that later, for now...

HolaHolaHola Beautifuls! Have you missed Babushka? Babushka’s missed you all. 

She’s also missing Sweetie.

In case you don’t know, Dear Sweetie passed away in January of this year. After a week in ICU and 4 hearttacks there, on January 11, BB’s querido husband of almost 10 years left this world, and oh Beautifuls, it has not been easy. You know BB doesn’t like to be a downer, but she does tell things as they are. So here’s a little post to prepare you for the inevitable. 

The grief, that’s definitivamente part of the inevitable, pero that one we know is coming. Everyone is different, so the how and how long is an individual thing, the form and how you deal with it, also individual. Sorry, Babushka has no “must do” for eso, except to say it will come. No Beautifuls, the preparation BB needs to share, stress you do, is the physical, mundane things that are tedious but makes the adios less painful after parting.

Speak of death with your loved ones. Let them know your wishes, how you want to say goodbye. How you want to be remembered. Final resting place, where and how. And then the legalities, Oh Beautifuls, so many legalities!!! Here’s a lista that BB knows to be helpful and true:

1. Pay for your funeral, cremation, whatever service/ceremony/celebration you want for your final resting place and goodbye. Even write your obituary. They may not use it, pero at least they’ll know what was important to you to share. 

2. Make a will. If you can’t afford an attorney, there are forms you can fill out and have notarized. Keep it safe, keep it current.

3. Assign a beneficiary to all legal accounts. ALL bank accounts, no matter how small need a beneficiary. If you do not have a co-signer, co-owner on the account,make sure you assign beneficiaries to your accounts.

4. If you own property, make sure the name of your spouse is on the deed.

Unfortunately BB knows first hand of these hardships. Sweetie didn’t do any of these except the cremation, so a go fund me had to be made to help pay probate and expenses previously paid by the two of us.  In Florida it’s not automatic, “Casa BB” isn’t; the house we both lived in for the 10 years of marriage did not automatically go to Babushka. The bank accounts with no beneficiary assigned will probably go to creditors. 

Coming to grip with your passing is enough to come to terms with, you don’t need these extra burdens for your loved ones. They have enough with the shock, emptiness, grief of you gone.

HolaHolaHola Beautifuls!

The Phoenix, mythical, mystical ave that lived for 500 years, would set itself on fire, to be reborn new and ready to live again.  How many of us have done the same? Quee?? JU SO FONII!! Ok si, maybe no literalmente setting ourselves on fire, but following life sin parar, just plowing ahead, not really seeing our surroundings or the important things in it, only to be pushed to the point of destruction.  As we say in Cuban, humans are "Hijos del maltrato" and only learn by experience. And sometimes not even then. Mi amigo Humberto Castillero went through such a life altering event and has realigned himself with life and what is his life lesson/mission. Thankfully for us he has shared that experience and offers a vision, solution, way of living, that may save us from fireburn.

Cuando BB met Humberto at a #850Latinos networking event sponsored by Conexion, he struck her as a personable man with a gentle, quiet power, but who came alive when he spoke of his journey and what he had learned.  When you read this book you'll understand what Babushka felt.  His historia is thorough and heartfelt and he tries to share all that he lived and how life is now with a clearer understanding and path. BB Pulled Her Own Finger aka How NOT to pitch to #Sponsors, A Cautionary Tale for #Conference Goers

HolaHolaHola My Beautifuls!

BB was told Queen Victoria had said that, and even though it couldn't be substantiated,the truth behind the statement was something I should have followed.  Oh si, somethings should never be left on the back burner. Literally.

Last week Babushka went to #Hispz15 , the fourth Hispanicize event BB atended. This year they did things a bit differently;bloggers had to sign up beforehand for some events/sessions and then wait to see if they had been selected.  This one event, the invite arrived 40 mins before it actually started. Needless to say Cubantime was in order, but not too much so as La Tata's home was only 20 mins away via public transit. Ya the stomach was starting its churning...

If any of you have had the chance to meet an important possible sponsor/client you know you don't want to miss one minute of the opportunity. Especially when they came just to hear what attendees had to say. And you know BB always has something to say. Bueno, this was over breakfast and of course cafe was served. Cafe, nerves,excitement...you see it coming verdad?  

One of the sponsors team wanted to speak with Babushka about a comment she had made and asked to meet with her afterwards. Who was BB to say no?? In hindsight, maybe a "later" would have been better.  Speaking with the first rep was good, the second was charming, and said she definitely wanted me to speak with the last associate who was the head of Florida. Oh my- the motherlode.  Unfortunately, by the time that happened,it was- Oh My, The Motherload!!!

Babushka did try to disimular-pretend that she was walking away (backwards, still conversing and looking at the sponsor) because she was late for another session. Still not sure if being the only two left in the room was a good thing, as there was no one else to blame the silent killer on...

As you well know My Beautifuls, BB tries to see the positive in every situation.  The business cards of this sponsor have mysteriously disappeared from the stack of cards collected.  Will there be a frantic search for them?  JU SO FONII!!!  Babushka will now follow Queen Victoria's example and be poised, knowing they will appear when the time is right. When the sponsors eyes have stopped watering and can read my email.
