It's been awhile since Babushka's reviewed books, but this one captured BB's corazon.

A cuento of Miss Olive, a pound puppy wishing for her "furever" home.  Being three legged,  she is overlooked by many and was the last remaining in the foster home. Pero don't fret Beautifuls, there's a happy ending; Miss Olive is adopted and now has a familia and a furever home.

"Miss Olive Finds Her Furever Friends continues the story of a little Italian Greyhound with three legs who is adopted by a loving family in the award-winning first book in the series, Miss Olive Finds Her Furever Home. In Miss Olive Finds Her Furever Friends, Miss Olive learns that it’s her birthday and that her parents have planned a special celebration which will include treats, presents and friends. Her party is nearly ruined when she runs into a couple of grouchy dogs at the park who proceed to bully the poor pup. She realizes that true friends will stick by her and won’t join in with taunts from bullies."

It's a lovely libro Beautifuls, and it touches on so many temas close to BB's corazon.

Inclusion, Kindness, Amor for All, Anti-Bullying, defending what you know is right, todo eso.  Pero the very best thing of these books, of this series? Estan basados en la realidad; they are based on true events and characters.

#TBT US 19th Amendment, Women's Suffrage- 100 Años and Just Getting Started! @ConexionFlorida

As Babushka shared in last month’s edicion, 

AMENDMENT XV -Passed by Congress 26 February 1869; Ratified 3 February 1870 

The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color or previous condition of servitude…

This was true- if you were male. For females, that right didn’t happen until 1920.

Some of the reasons to go against women voting:

“BECAUSE 90% of the women either do not want it, or do not care.”

The league of Women Voters, caring for 100 years. 

“BECAUSE it means competition of women with men instead of co-operation.”

or annul their husband's votes.”

-Actually, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing...

And here is a retort by Alice Stone Blackwell, one-time editor of the Woman’s Journal, in the National American Woman Suffrage Association publication. She stated 16 reasons why women SHOULD be given the vote. BB will only mention two as they are in her mind the most importante.

“Because it is fair and right that those who must obey the laws should have a voice in making them, and that those who must pay taxes should have a vote as to the size of the tax and the way it shall be spent.”  

Obvio. 

There was even a tea throwing incident about something like that way back in US historia...

  “Because laws unjust to women would be amended more quickly.”

As done in the July edition, BB points out what should be the truth, but in reality we all know better don’t we Beautifuls?  In the current US atmosphere, women still earn less than their male counterparts. According to the IWPR, Institute for Women’s Policy Research," if change continues at the same slow pace as it has done for the past fifty years, it will take 40 years—or until 2059—for women to finally reach pay parity. For women of color, the rate of change is even slower:

"Hispanic women will have to wait until 2224 and Black women will wait until 2130 

for equal pay."

Y  the magazine, Marie Claire,  highlighted “18 Ways Women Still Aren’t Equal to Men.”, although women are paid less than men, they pay more for many household items than men. Ex- shampoo, deodorant y medias! Also the underrepresentation of women in various carreras and positions in industry,govierno, and sciences is sad to say the least. Less funding is also allocated to female entrepreneurs and female owned startups. 

Si Beautifuls, mucho has yet to be done for equality all around, pero let us celebrar those brave sisters and supporters who helped give us the ground to stand up and get our Voice to Vote!

The Bohemian Babushka – BB for short – is a cross-cultural sensation.  She is the Cuban-American creation of Florida’s own Sonia Guerra, whose wry, wise insights into what it means to be a Hispanic woman living in an Anglo world have won her more than 30,000 followers on “Feibu,” “IGrammy,” and “Tweety.”  

You can meet her everywhere.  In addition to her monthly column in Conexión and her blog “Babushka’s Baile,” BB has been known to appear – cloche hat on her head, iridescent-blue eyeshadow on her eyelids, and “JU SO FONI!!!” on her lips – at conventions in Miami (she has an international following at Hispanicize), tourism conferences in Orlando, historical reenactments in St. Augustine, press conferences in Tallahassee, and tour buses guiding folks through a pilgrimage to Hispanic heritage sites statewide.

This month, Babushka is making a new departure.  She is Zooming into 1615, starring in TWAM Virtual’s Ark of Wonders.

A new translation of a snappy satire that was written in Spanish by Miguel de Cervantes just over 400 years ago, Ark of Wonders tells the juicy story of what happens when a tiny troupe of actors arrive in a little country town on the same day that the local bigwigs are celebrating a high-society wedding.  The actors sell the bigwigs one performance of “miraculous and spectacular sights” for the wedding reception – sights that only people whose bloodlines are perfectly pure and whose parents were properly married will be able to see.

Babushka plays Chirinos in the Ark of Wonders, the “autora” who takes care of business for the actors who dream up the show.  As Chirinos, Babushka sells the town council on the idea of buying a performance of this magically exclusive play, collects payment for the performance in advance, and produces most of the wonders that the bigwigs “see,” ranging from a charging bull fresh from Salamanca, to a “mischief of mice” right off of Noah’s ark, “two dozen raging lions and huge, fanged bears,” and a dancing lady from the holy land, “the one they call Herodias, whose dancing placed the head of John the Baptist on a plate.”

Theater with a Mission (TWAM) selected Ark of Wonders for TWAM Virtual because the play offers a vibrant invitation to visit Spanish La Florida.  By bringing us face to face with how our Spanish-speaking ancestors laughed and worried about purity in our bloodlines, security in our status, and living up to what the neighbors think, Cervantes’ sparkling satire functions like a time machine.  This half-hour play, breezy as a BB blogpost, tells us secrets about our past that the history books miss.

TWAM asked BB to play Chirinos because she is “a human shot of espresso” who is completely “upbeat but keeping it real.” Her patented sense of fun with a serious purpose is perfect for the role.  Don’t miss Bohemian Babushka’s history-making performance.
