Tickled by @TWAMFlorida- Article 'bout BB in @ConexionFlorida

HolaHolaHola Beautifuls!

For years BB has been part of TWAM- Theater With A Mission. She has written about them, here and here, done YouTubes con ellos, aqui  y aqui and porsupuesto IGrammy here and aqui and of course their original and encantador Loco for Love Festival  where Cervantes & Shakespeare raise from the dead to raise up their pens in duel. All this y mas has the amor been for TWAM, pero nunca se imaginaba Babushka que it was mutual. Aqui an article written by Ben Gunter, the Founder y Director de Theater With A Mission.   https://conexionflorida.com/babushka-zooms-into-1615/

Babushka Zooms into 1615
by Ben Gunter

The Bohemian Babushka – BB for short – is a cross-cultural sensation.  She is the Cuban-American creation of Florida’s own Sonia Guerra, whose wry, wise insights into what it means to be a Hispanic woman living in an Anglo world have won her more than 30,000 followers on “Feibu,” “IGrammy,” and “Tweety.”

You can meet her everywhere.  In addition to her monthly column in Conexión and her blog “Babushka’s Baile,” BB has been known to appear – cloche hat on her head, iridescent-blue eyeshadow on her eyelids, and “JU SO FONI!!!” on her lips – at conventions in Miami (she has an international following at Hispanicize), tourism conferences in Orlando, historical reenactments in St. Augustine, press conferences in Tallahassee, and tour buses guiding folks through a pilgrimage to Hispanic heritage sites statewide.

This month, Babushka is making a new departure.  She is Zooming into 1615, starring in TWAM Virtual’s Ark of Wonders.

A new translation of a snappy satire that was written in Spanish by Miguel de Cervantes just over 400 years ago, Ark of Wonders tells the juicy story of what happens when a tiny troupe of actors arrive in a little country town on the same day that the local bigwigs are celebrating a high-society wedding.  The actors sell the bigwigs one performance of “miraculous and spectacular sights” for the wedding reception – sights that only people whose bloodlines are perfectly pure and whose parents were properly married will be able to see.

Babushka plays Chirinos in the Ark of Wonders, the “autora” who takes care of business for the actors who dream up the show.  As Chirinos, Babushka sells the town council on the idea of buying a performance of this magically exclusive play, collects payment for the performance in advance, and produces most of the wonders that the bigwigs “see,” ranging from a charging bull fresh from Salamanca, to a “mischief of mice” right off of Noah’s ark, “two dozen raging lions and huge, fanged bears,” and a dancing lady from the holy land, “the one they call Herodias, whose dancing placed the head of John the Baptist on a plate.”

Theater with a Mission (TWAM) selected Ark of Wonders for TWAM Virtual because the play offers a vibrant invitation to visit Spanish La Florida.  By bringing us face to face with how our Spanish-speaking ancestors laughed and worried about purity in our bloodlines, security in our status, and living up to what the neighbors think, Cervantes’ sparkling satire functions like a time machine.  This half-hour play, breezy as a BB blogpost, tells us secrets about our past that the history books miss.

TWAM asked BB to play Chirinos because she is “a human shot of espresso” who is completely “upbeat but keeping it real.” Her patented sense of fun with a serious purpose is perfect for the role.  Don’t miss Bohemian Babushka’s history-making performance.

If you visit www.comedias.org, you can see BB play La Chirinos for an international audience of theater aficionados who live in towns that stretch from California to Spain, during the Association for Classical Hispanic Theatre’s first online conference on July 17.  If you visit www.theaterwithamission.com, you can catch BB in Cervantes’ Ark of Wonders, newly translated by Kathleen Costales and Ian Borden, any time you please.  For more information, and for future installments of TWAM Virtual, follow Theater with a Mission (TWAM) on Feibu, IGrammy, and Tweety.

This July, Zoom back into Spanish Florida with the Bohemian Babushka!  As BB says, “HolaHolaHola Beautifuls – there’s no time like the present for getting up close and personal with our pasts… (and don’t miss my grandson EO playing Sobrino)!”

Gracias to Ian Borden for editing the performances.

Wasn’t that BUENISIMO?? Y no porque it was about Babushka.
Ok si, maybe un poquito; Babushka’s still blushing. Pero sabes que Beautifuls?
Goes to show that being yourself is siempre the way to be.

Besides, be anything but BB?

And ahora, BB's Beloved TWAM- Theater With A Mission

We are Theater with a Mission, a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation made up of actors, scholars, and cultural explorers based in Tallahassee, Florida. We’re united by one quest: to rediscover history by reviving plays from el Siglo de Oro, the Spanish Golden Age.

Our Mission
Theater with a Mission (TWAM) creates and performs plays that explore milestones in Florida’s history.  Presented in English spiced with historic Spanish, in period costume with authentic songs and dances, our original scripts and new translations carry audiences across barriers of language, time, and space, into face-to-face encounters with Florida’s Spanish roots and history’s great ideas.

BB has been part of TWAM for many years, now part of the Social Media Team as well as acting. Aver si no ven a Babushka in this promo filmstrip for the Loco For Love Festival, Sept. 13-16.

Babushka loves those two worlds/troupes, pero saben what she loves mas?

Hispanic Heritage Month- Our Past, Our Pride, and The Power.

Babushka originally penned this for the bilingual N.Florida publication Conexion, the Oct. 2016 edition. The title for the article was "Hispanic Heritage Month- The Pride & The Power."

HolaHolaHola Beautifuls!!

In 1968 President Lyndon Johnson issued the first Presidential Proclamation 3869, which stated in part:

Wishing to pay special tribute to the Hispanic tradition, and having in mind the fact that our five Central American neighbors celebrate their Independence Day on the fifteenth of September and the Republic of Mexico on the sixteenth, the Congress by House Joint Resolution 1299, has requested the President to issue annually a proclamation designating the week including September 15 and 16 as National Hispanic Heritage Week.

It was later changed to a full month when the number of Latinos grew substantially to be placed on the official US Census questionnaire.

And so it has been done every year since then.  Babushka gives thanks to this great country in recognizing the impact and importance our gente have made and do not take for granted the responsibility that comes with that.  The richness of our cultura, the history of siglos and the strength and beauty of it all is for us to emphasis and not forget. To many, Hispanic Heritage Month is the only time our accomplishments are shared and we must take advantage of this.

The querido editor of Conexion, David Triana, acting as Master Of Ceremonies at the Hispanic Fest 2016, benefiting non profit United For a Good Cause Annual Emerald Coast Christmas Miracle Needy Children’s Fiesta, on the importance of the festival,

“Our success is not based on how many Hispanics are going to show up —
we know they’re going to show up — but by how many non-Hispanics show up,” David Triana

Babushka wholeheartedly agrees with this statement and would even say this is true for all moments of Hispanic Heritage Month. The more we learn about our fellow Earth dwellers, their cultures, their customs, their beliefs, the less we fear and appreciate them and their offerings to our world.  Pero BB would like to expand on this, take it deeper and even inward.  For Hispanics/Latinos themselves this is the perfect momento for self discovery.  Take advantage of the topic and explore the richness and historia of our gente.
