THT-Tallahassee Hispanic Theater celebrates its 5th Micro Theater Festival

HolaHolaHola Beautifuls!
BB loves performing with TWAM and their offerings of classic Spanish plays, but thanks to the Tallahassee Hispanic Theater she's enjoying the modern plays as well. This is the fifth Micro Theater Festival given by THT and Babushka can't wait!! Matter of fact, para no demorar, these are the sentiments of founder Alejandra Gutierrez, THT director in July's Conexion newspaper.

"Micro theater brings short stage performances up close to the audience in unusual venues. In the beautiful Carriage House the audience will be able to enjoy the setting, music, food, and performances (presented all in the same open space) while moving freely around the space and mingling with others."

Play 1-

A comical encounter takes place between a prince and a princess in this unique fairy tale updated for the 21st century!

A female prisoner recounts the story of her past in this powerful monologue about love, betrayal, and revenge.

Who is the better poet? Neruda or Borges? A man and a woman learn more than they expect about these two poets (and themselves!) in the world premiere of this romantic comedy with a twist! Inspired by the poetry of Pablo Neruda and Jorge Luis Borges.

A man receives a stressful voicemail message from his girlfriend that sets him into a drunken tailspin as he tries to figure out the meaning of those four terrifying words in any relationship: “We Need to Talk…”

In this thought-provoking dark comedy, a sales promoter tries to sell a highly unusual service.

Sounds BUENISIMO doesn't it Beautifuls? You have comedia, drama, intriguing subject matter, a night celebrating Hispanic plays and  culture with a full menu of food and musica included, and you know BB's loving that!  And you will too. Go to TLH website,
Tallahassee Hispanic Theater for more insight and tickets.

Babushka Besos a todos.

HolaHolaHola Beautifuls!

So another full day of activities were planned for us, and Babushka's beginning to understand why she so loves living UpNorthInTheSouth.  They eat as much as Cubanos!!  Es mas, I'd say for breakfast they even beat us.  De veras.  Don't think that's possible?  Look at this menu- a whole side dedicated to desayuno. AND ALL OF IT GOOD!!!  No wonder they have more than one location.

Si, Babushka tried all those pictured and gives them a definite ESO!!!

Those gals at Visit Tallahassee know their stuff, 'cause we wuz stuffed.
Felizmente our next stop had us on our feet digesting art and the hearty breakfast.

One of the treasures of Tallahassee, The LeMoyne Center for Visual Arts was founded in 1963 to be a gallery of fine arts and to be a place for art education activities in North Florida.  Turns out, it's one of the top 100 art festivals in the nation! Housed in an 1854 Antebellum home, it houses a gallery, sculpture garden, and year long art classes.  PLUS members of BB's beloved TWAM have portrayed Jacques LeMoyne, the artist the center is named after. On the day we visited we enjoyed the "Side By Side" exhibit by Debby and Randy Brienen.

Listen to museum Director Ann Kozeliski as she shares the history and the current activities the center has, and how it's goal is "to get art into the hands of the people". The growing popularity and fama LeMoyne is having attests that they're doing it right!

Recognize the place in the painting?  Wakulla Spgs Lodge, de BB's home town.

And then Beautifuls, then came THIS.

That was Babushka's reaction when they said we were going to go on a Segway.
To which BB said, "No way!"

Pero you know that's blah, blah, because Babushka will try anything once, twice to make sure...
but a little convincing did have to happen...

Some instruction via Tim Nettles, owner of
Tallahassee Segway Tours gives a demo to calm our nerves.  The plan was to start at Cascades Park, then go to the Smokey Hollow Commemoration.

So... Did BB actually learn to ride a Segway??

Not only did she ride it Beautifuls, but was zipping all through Tallahassee turning heads!  This was one of the best tours, because not only did we see sights, we were quite the sight ourselves.  We covered a lot of ground in an hour. The Capitol, Railroad Square, College Town, and many other points of interest, all with fascinating facts shared by third generation Tallahassee Tim.

Though it isn't strenuous, Babushka will stress that it's strictly a straight standing stance and you will feel it once you dismount. Would BB ride a Segway again?  JU SO FONII!!!  She's looking forward to it and is even organizing a publicity tour for TWAM on Segways.  They're fun, "get you around town" attention getters that everyone should try at least once.

Porque 12+ hours makes for an eventful day, but too long a blogpost.

Until Part 2,

#Tallahassee Twofer- Tallahassee Hispanic Theater ,Second Annual Micro Theater Festival

Babushka was gifted tickets to this years festival. After the wonderful time last year, teatro/comida, 2 of BB's loves, had to say a definite Si & Eso! 👍

Babushka's Baile Tallahassee Hispanic Theater Second Annual Micro Theater Festival

HolaHolaHola Beautifuls!
Hispanic Theater is alive and well in Florida's capitol, Tallahassee. Quee?? Ju So Fonii!! Ok si, not in Spanish. Excepto for a few words in BB's Beloved TWAM, Tally isn't quite ready pa' eso, but en English, plays written by Hispanic playwrights, are the reason for the Tallahassee Hispanic Theater . They perform throughout the year, both for adults and children, showing the richness and talents of nuestra gente. Last year they started doing a showcase of short plays, in one venue, pero it's the audience who moves to view the show. BB wrote about the Premiere Microtheater experience, thoroughly enjoying the mexcla of theater, community y comida.

Now, you know BB, she doesn't work harder than she has to, especially when the original is excelente. Here is their press release:

"Following the success of its Micro Theater Festival in July 2018, the Tallahassee Hispanic Theater will  present the Second Annual Micro Theater Festival on June 21-22,2019 at 7:30pm at the Carriage House at Goodwood Museum. The Second Annual Micro Theater Festival will present a series of short, 15 to 20-minute plays written by Hispanic playwrights. In addition to the plays, the audience will have the opportunity to enjoy drinks and Hispanic food provided by Tally Arepas (available for purchase), and live Hispanic music throughout the event.

The Festival will be a presented on the historic grounds of the Goodwood Museum and Gardens. The audience will be able to enjoy the setting, music, food, and performances (presented all in the same open space) while moving freely around the space and mingling with others. The plays will be performed in English.
This year the Tallahassee Hispanic Theater will present five short plays as part of the Festival.

Mother Love by Almúdena Grandes: this fiercely parodic monologue (originally a short story) tells, from the perspective of an apparently exemplary mother, a black tale about the disintegrating relationship between a mother and a daughter.

A Mommy and a Daddy by Ignacio del Moral’s is a lively, and somewhat melancholic dialogue through which two people, a man and a woman, find each other and express their longings while they take their respective babies for a stroll.

A Night in the subway by Paloma Pedrero: Late at night, in a deserted subway station, a man and woman meet and have a conversation. “Sometimes, random encounters with a stranger can surprise us, and we learn as much about them as we do about ourselves.”

Castings by Cristina Colmena: An actor and an actress meet at a casting where both of them are auditioning for the same part. “This comedy plays with the old metaphor of Life/Theater just like Pirandello did but with a comic undertone.”

Capricho by Nilo Cruz: a forgotten understudy waits in vain for his call, still in his costume for some long-ago Lope de Vega play. “Foolish and forlorn, he’s a leftover trouper, and old-world soul doing a ten-minute vaudeville turns on the virtues of standing by.”
Tickets are available for purchase in advance from the Tallahassee Hispanic Theater website, www.tallahasseehispanictheater.org. Festival Tickets are $15 (adults) and $12 (students, seniors and Goodwood members). For additional information, contact tallahasseehispanictheater@gmail.com."

PalaverTreeTheater_TheaterWithAMission_BohemianBabushka

HolaHolaHola Beautifuls!

Aqui esta BB,writing this post while working the box office during Palaver Tree Theater's Premier Season. They are performing Topdog/Underdog to a full house. FULL HOUSE.
To that, Babushka can only say- ESO!!!

If you weren't aware, Babushka is into teatro. Quee?? Obvious because of BB's over the top personality? JU SO FONII!!That's being Cuban, not theatrical.

The reason this post is called Extreme Entertainment is the range, the different types of offerings between these two troupes.  Palaver Tree Theater is a true community theater, using its voz to share the history of Wakulla/Crawfordville and select dramatic offerings to open the conocimientos, mindsets of our bella part of the mundo.

The MISSION STATEMENT:

Palaver Tree Theater Company is dedicated to the strong belief that theatre is an instrument of communal transformation. Our founding principles are to be inclusive, accessible, educational, and a relevant source to all – regardless of cultural or economic backgrounds – by providing opportunities to witness forms of artistry that validate and reflect the human experience.

And ahora, BB's Beloved TWAM- Theater With A Mission

We are Theater with a Mission, a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation made up of actors, scholars, and cultural explorers based in Tallahassee, Florida. We’re united by one quest: to rediscover history by reviving plays from el Siglo de Oro, the Spanish Golden Age.

Our Mission
Theater with a Mission (TWAM) creates and performs plays that explore milestones in Florida’s history.  Presented in English spiced with historic Spanish, in period costume with authentic songs and dances, our original scripts and new translations carry audiences across barriers of language, time, and space, into face-to-face encounters with Florida’s Spanish roots and history’s great ideas.

BB has been part of TWAM for many years, now part of the Social Media Team as well as acting. Aver si no ven a Babushka in this promo filmstrip for the Loco For Love Festival, Sept. 13-16.

Babushka loves those two worlds/troupes, pero saben what she loves mas?
When the dos meet in the middle; it's magia.

Hispanic Heritage Month- Our Past, Our Pride, and The Power.

Babushka originally penned this for the bilingual N.Florida publication Conexion, the Oct. 2016 edition. The title for the article was "Hispanic Heritage Month- The Pride & The Power."

HolaHolaHola Beautifuls!!

In 1968 President Lyndon Johnson issued the first Presidential Proclamation 3869, which stated in part:

Wishing to pay special tribute to the Hispanic tradition, and having in mind the fact that our five Central American neighbors celebrate their Independence Day on the fifteenth of September and the Republic of Mexico on the sixteenth, the Congress by House Joint Resolution 1299, has requested the President to issue annually a proclamation designating the week including September 15 and 16 as National Hispanic Heritage Week.

It was later changed to a full month when the number of Latinos grew substantially to be placed on the official US Census questionnaire.

And so it has been done every year since then.  Babushka gives thanks to this great country in recognizing the impact and importance our gente have made and do not take for granted the responsibility that comes with that.  The richness of our cultura, the history of siglos and the strength and beauty of it all is for us to emphasis and not forget. To many, Hispanic Heritage Month is the only time our accomplishments are shared and we must take advantage of this.

The querido editor of Conexion, David Triana, acting as Master Of Ceremonies at the Hispanic Fest 2016, benefiting non profit United For a Good Cause Annual Emerald Coast Christmas Miracle Needy Children’s Fiesta, on the importance of the festival,

“Our success is not based on how many Hispanics are going to show up —
we know they’re going to show up — but by how many non-Hispanics show up,” David Triana

Babushka wholeheartedly agrees with this statement and would even say this is true for all moments of Hispanic Heritage Month. The more we learn about our fellow Earth dwellers, their cultures, their customs, their beliefs, the less we fear and appreciate them and their offerings to our world.  Pero BB would like to expand on this, take it deeper and even inward.  For Hispanics/Latinos themselves this is the perfect momento for self discovery.  Take advantage of the topic and explore the richness and historia of our gente.

Not only a part of it, but part of US culture too.

Ahora mismo,  Mexico and Colombia are the only nations with larger Hispanic populations than the U.S.  Not realize la fuerza de los ciglos within us, not bring forth la potencia we US Latinos share?  JU SO FONII!!  A wonderful place for us to start is http://hispanicheritagemonth.gov/ . Here they showcase past and present, and events all over the globe.  Whatever forma you decide to follow, be it your immediate familia’s history, or a particular subject, art form you enjoy, learn about your Hispanic Heritage. Hispanic Heritage Month 2015- History & N.Florida Happenings

HolaHolaHola Beautifuls!!!

When BB was bb, she didn’t really think about the whys of Hispanic Heritage Month; it was just a month of fun activities that mi madre would take us to. Ahora BB was curious as to when the US officially started this and why it doesn’t start on the first of September instead of the middle. Originally President Lyndon B. Johnson had declared a Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968, which was then made into a full month in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan. Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15, commemorating the date of independence for five Latin American countries—Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Tambien, Mexico declared its independence on September 16, and Chile on September 18. Pretty cool verdad? Babushka LOVES history and the whens and whys of things.

Quee?? So now that BB knows the background does Babushka no longer think it’s a good month of fun activities? JU SO FONII!!!  Por Supuesto, of course it is- especially now that one knows the whys.  Matter of fact, not only does BB know the “whys”, but knowing the “wheres” is even better! Y aqui, here Up North in The South, we have plenty going on for Hispanic Heritage Month. Ok Si, usually when one thinks of Hispanos in Florida it’s Miami, Orlando and maybe Tampa. Bueno believe it or not Beautifuls there are plenty of us up here in the state’s panhandle and we’re proud of our heritage and looking forward to showing it off!

The activities were fun and varied, just like the heritage and countries represented.

You know BB HAD to film that one right?  Heard my "ESO!!!" ?

Rudy Saez doing a great job as Master of Ceremonies, and
Mi Amigo Enrique Barrera proudly holding the American Flag.

Don't know who thought of having that Flag Parade, but ending it with the American Flag and asking everyone to stand during the US National Anthem made BB proud. Proud of my heritage and proud of my nationality, proud of and grateful for, the organizers that acknowledged and thanked this great nation for allowing us to share being Latinos, to share our heritage while still feeling very much American. This is the 22nd year the North Florida Hispanic Association has this festival, and BB couldn't have been happier with how it was organized and celebrated.

Not only will attendees be sharing in our heritage and celebration, but they'll be helping make a child's holiday much, mucho mas brighter.

If the prior festival had Latinos being proud of  Loving America, then this one has Americans proud of Loving Latinos.  Si My Beautifuls, Theater with a Mission will be performing El Muerto, a play from the Spanish Golden Age, at this festival.  Mis Queridos TWAM amigos will be there thanks to the patronage of Conexion, a bilingual newspaper servicing all of the North Florida panhandle and South Alabama.

TWAM will be performing the one act farce by Bernardo Francisco de Quiros;
a timeless comedy that will entertain the whole family.

Looks like fun verdad? And it is. BB should know, because she's part of the cast. Oh Si She Is!!
We'll get more into details another time, with more pictures and stories.

Y speaking of pics and stories...

Believe it or not, Babushka has lived Up North in The South almost a decade and never went to this.  BB was always in Miami!!  Hopefully this year Babushka will be able to attend and share the fun and proof that-
