#TBT Our Hispanic Heritage (Month). The Importancia of Being Represented. @ConexionFlorida Sept.2020

Hispanic Heritage Monthumcgiving.org

HolaHolaHola Beautifuls!
This is a repost of BB's column in this month's edition of Conexion.

Why Hispanic heritage month? For the same reason there is a movement to erect an American Latino museum. To quote the Friends of the National Museum of the American Latino “to create a museum in our nation’s capital to educate, inspire and encourage respect and understanding of the richness and diversity of the American Latino experience within the U.S. and its territories. By highlighting the contributions made by Latino icons, pioneers and communities to the American way of life we are all better able to truly understand what makes our nation great.” Contributions we have made, hispanos en las Americas. And there have been many contributions in our US historia. En el pasado esta la potencia, but the importance of NOW is also valid in noting our history.
American Latino Museum
This brings to mind the US Census. Beautifuls, if we don’t have our presence accounted for, how can we expect respect and establish need? Strength in numbers, detailed and documented disparities, all this comes from llenando the census; tenemos until September 30. Taken every 10 years, BB can’t stress the importancia of this constitutionally mandated count. From this census comes the ayuda and allocations for the proximo 10 años, truly, where the past and the future collide. Estan contentos with the representation Hispanos have had in federal programs? Have our needs been acknowledged and met? Parte del problema is not knowing how many Latinos live here, and what that population number will mean, and how it’ll impact society. Al final of this writing you’ll find links to the aforementioned organizaciones, and a video BB did to recruit participation in this very importante census. Babushka truly believes in llenando that questionnaire; nuestros futuros truly do depend on it.

#LATISM 16- Latinos as Change Agents

This post was originally written for Conexion, the Premiere bilingual newspaper in N. Florida.
BB added a little algo to appease the Google Gods.

HolaHolaHola Beautifuls!

For the second year in a row, Babushka was honored to be named “a top Latino digital influencer” and is headed to the LATISM16 conference in Orlando this October. LATISM stands for” Latinos in Tech Innovation & Social Media and is a non-profit organization dedicated to the empowerment of the Latino community in the areas de educacion, health, technology y business through the use of Tech innovation and Social Media.” Their goal is to “share best practices,  reach Latino(a)s in the digital space, and  build the pipeline of  tech innovators.  Together we are igniting Latino(a)s to drive the innovation economy." And they are Beautifuls, they are!

The impact of Latinos, especially when banded together and highlighted is a bella and powerful thing.  Thanks to LATISM and other like minded organizations, Latinos are getting heard and paid attention to, but we need more of us to bring new ideas and insights, more potencia and potential, more volume to our voices. This is a particularly crucial time; this is the year politics is priming to either elevate or eradicate the Latino existence in our nation.  Join us in our rally for acknowledgement and advancement.

LATISM-Disney-Coronado Spgs-Orlando-Florida

October  19-21 LATISM will be having their conference at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort.  Un lugar perfecto to celebrate our accomplishments and unite on our futures, especially since it’s in our state!  If you’ve wanted to visit Disney World and at the same time make a change in this world, now’s the time for that twofer. If you’ve ever wanted to voice your opinions, learn what that voice could do, and/or learn about topics you could help with, this is the conference to attend. #HISPZ16 Time for Doing Good and Getting Better.

HolaHolaHola Beautifuls!

La Potencia que es Hispanicize is upon us once again, and thanks to the S Sisters Babushka will be attending once again. Didn't think BB was going to go this year, but fairy Godmothers/fathers DO exist. Gracias to Miriam, Manny, Heather y Maria, this will be the fifth time Blessed. Why does Babushka call this a blessing?  JU SO FONII !!! Hispanicize is THE event to attend if you are in the hispanic social media, or want to be.

#Hispz16 is the iconic, largest annual event for Latino trendsetters and newsmakers in digital content creation, journalism, marketing, entertainment and tech entrepreneurship. The event will take place in downtown Miami’s InterContinental hotel, April 4-8, 2016. The Hispanicize event is a launch pad for creative endeavors, new products, technologies, marketing campaigns, films, books and more targeting Latinos in the U.S. and/or Puerto Rico.

Vieron why BB calls it La Potencia? Pero realmente, it's so much more than that and it truly is one of those things you have to experience in person to see/feel the power and potential.  It's gathering of like minded individuals who believe in the power of Latinos, our talents, contributions, and aspirations. A place where we can exchange ideas, knowledge, concerns to better each other and in turn our world. After 5 years Beautifuls, this is like a family reunion for BB. A family reunion where as a collective we can change things we care about. Es mas, there will be a panel "Multicultural Influence for Commerce,Justice, and Social Good" presented by The Colvert Foundation. Y'all KNOW how much Babushka believes in doing things for Social Good and am especially feliz that she can do another BB Twofer,  This year mi querida amiga Laurita Tellado is launching her Non-profit The Laurita Spina Bifida Project.  Laurita and her Bella familia have been very special to BB for many years now and being able to help in such a worthwhile cause is a wonderful thing.

"Spina bifida is a neural tube defect that leaves an opening in the underdeveloped spine at birth. It is more common than muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, and cystic fibrosis combined. 70 percent of cases, there are as many as 166,000 people living with spina bifida in the country. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Latinos have the highest incidence of spina bifida of all ethnicities." Laurita was born with Spina Bifida and is now the Maravillosa Ms. we all love, but it hasn't been, and isn't without its' trials and frustrations.

“Many organizations that cater to the spina bifida community are almost exclusively focusing on preventing spina bifida, and are founded and run by parents and health professionals,” Tellado said. “The Laurita Spina Bifida Project seeks to educate the community about the issues affecting those of us currently living with spina bifida. We are the first organization of our kind— conceptualized and founded by an individual  who is living with Spina Bifida."

And that is the heart of Hispanicize Beautifuls, helping each other.  Pero there's also the soul of our hispanidad- La Musica.  It's another track and major plus of going to HIspanicize. Babushka was introduced to so many up and coming artists who are now major players en la musica!  And you know how much BB loves her dance!  So, come join us in Miami for #Hispz16 ; Babushka will be covering it on social media, just follow the hashtag y  A BAILAR SE HA DICHO!!!

"LATISM15 brings together the top leaders and influencers in the space.  Our goal is to share best practices,  reach Latino(a)s in the digital space, and  build the pipeline of  tech innovators.  Together we are igniting Latino(a)s to drive the innovation economy."

If you could lobby in DC what cause would it be? Cual de los siguientes son especiales pa' ti?  Education,Health,Technology,Civic Engagement,Diversity & Inclusion,Business, and National Policy are the starred topics. LATISM15 proposes to instruct top Latino Influencers on how to better organize and project their passions and beliefs and then introduce them to other influencers and lawmakers who can further their causes. This year Babushka was invited to attend as a Top Latina Influencer because of her #StopTheStigma campaign, a campaign hoping to address and eradicate the imensa ignorancia and taboo in our community when it comes to Mental illness. Like BB, influencers on all the above topics will attend to be instructed and guided.

This nation's capitol, our nation's capitol will be the school for over 50 Latino Influencers and a group of hispanic students for the Latino Youth Summit. The goal is to learn, share, and support each other as we strive to have our issues- LATINO issues focused on. MassMutual's State of the American Family Study- #HispanicDream , Ojo on Hispanic Families

Babushka was asked by Latina Mom Bloggers to join a blog tour on behalf of MassMutual Financial Group.
BB's time was compensated, pero the story and opinions belong to Babushka.

"Hispanics are a force to be reckoned with in the United States today."

So starts MassMutual's Study of the American Family; you know BB had to read it verdad??

HolaHolaHola My Beautifuls!

Today Babushka shares with y'all the findings of a study MassMutual Financial Group did on Hispanic Families.  BB finds it interesante, and of course for this CAP (Cuban American Princesa), a story waiting to be told.

"The importance of respect, family unity, community involvement and loyalty permeate every aspect of
life, including their attitudes and perspectives about finances" "As a group, Hispanics are vulnerable to potential financial setbacks. Over one-third (35 percent) have set aside less than three months of their monthly living expenses for emergencies, and 7 percent have no savings at all."

They ain't just whistlin' La Guantanamera there!!

According to the study, the American Dream of home ownership is the number one priority of Hispanic families, with credit card liquidation following second.  Apparently Hispanics tend to owe slightly more than others.  Personally BB believes it's because we don't want our children to feel "lacking" or inferior to others.  Not to mention we tend to dress more stylish, love our perfumes, and take more issue with makeup and looks.  At least that's this CAPs view. Quee?  Ok si, JU SO FONII!!! the last sentence doesn't fit Babushka too much ahora, pero cuando era younger? Beautifuls, Por Fa! Actually, my parents were never into the typical material things. Pero si, they did fit the lucha for home ownership.  I also believe they never wanted us to feel less than our classmates or surroundings.  My parents did very well for themselves and we were the first Hispanic family to live in Miami Lakes, an upper middle class community.  BB and siblings never lacked for anything thanks to mis padres and La Tata who most definitely outright spoiled us.

The study goes on to say only 31% of Hispanics actually rank saving/investing for their children's education as important, though 50% of those asked say they will pay for the education themselves. Babushka in this showed her Anglo upbringing; my trio had a college fund paid into monthly, and the same is being done for the grandbabies.

Another area studied was financial planning.  While 43% believe investing and financial planning should be a high priority, only 28% think they are capable of reaching their goals by themselves.  Thankfully my parents were able to reach their goals, unfortunately BB never quite grasped the idea. This leads to the next part of the study, financial education for children.

Babushka's first real job was writing checks for my father. He showed me how to organize the bills, write in the checkbook the "to" and "for", and write checks.  BB learned very well how to write checks; what I didn't learn well was my bank account was not as llenito or fluid as his. Te lo dije- a true CAP.

Lastly, the subject of retirement among Hispanics is discussed.  Apparently we're more anxious about outliving our retirement savings.  Bueno, para Babushka that's so very true because there ain't nana nina in the nest.  Good thing Sweetie brings home straw so we can start padding, because it's never too late.

Y ustedes My Beautifuls, what's your style of saving, do you have one?  How accurate is this to your financial history?  Que views do you have on the topic?  Are you saving for your children? Will you be vagabond viejos?  Please compartir, compart insights y dreams. Oh, and a couple of dimes would be nice too.

Bailando with the Brands of Hispz13

HolaHolaHola My Beautifuls!!  You wanna hear something amazing I heard and learned from Hispz13?? Brands actually want US to approach them with ideas. Si, they actually said that. Find an idea that's organic to your blog's voice and present it. Quee?? JU SO FONII!!!  But of course BB put forth ideas, 'cause you don't get more organic than Babushka!

Primero, First- to Crest

Don't know if you can read that ad, but they had a fabulous panel stating what they were looking for in a blogging partner.

For my part- here's the pitch BB threw at them.

There are 2 things Latina Abuelas are known for, it's spoiling their grandchildren and always trying to feed them. Especially Sweets. Bueno... why not have a campaign showing Abuelita doing just that with the parent shaking their head in the background.  We then see abuela reading the web (she's a hip old lady) and then seeing it on TV where the stats for toothcare are not good for Hispanics.  Next we see her giving more sweets, but this time giving the child a tube of Crest and a spin toothbrush to use afterwards. Next shot- everybody's smiling overlooking the child while he's brushing.  Good verdad?  They seemed to like it.  P.S. Crest- BB's also an actress and wouldn't mind being the sugar shoving Grandma as well as the creative brains.  Just Sayin' .

Segundo, Second- Swiffer

They've got a real cute campaign going on, "Aprobado por Abuelita".  It's showing how their Swiffer products would be "Approved by Grandma".

Good, but BB can make it better.

First off, let's get a Granny with her Groove On!

Put on that Salsa music ♪♫, Swiffers attached to the hips and Watch Out!!
And can't you just see a Babushka Hat made out of Swiffer Dusters and headbanging?

ROCK  DUST ON!!!

Truthfully, wouldn't you just love to see that??

And because good things come in 3-

Third, Tercera- United Health Care   UHCLatino

Russ Bennett VP of Latino Health Solutions UHC Speaking

My friend Amanda of Brandon's Puppy did a great post about this panel.
Their website sounds super because not only is it in English/Spanish, but it has podcasts for those not too net savvy or who just like to hear their information.  This and the poster showing how everyday activites burn calories was what I liked best about the panel. Apparently our culture isn't too much into the exercising/eating healthier- especially the older generations; this made me think of La Tata and I stated that.  At 90 or 92, any attempt of having her walk a little more was met with "Ya pa' que?"  Cuban for "at this stage of my life, whatever for?"  Bueno, you don't get to be that age w/out being a bit feisty so I challenged her to walk just a little bit more each day.  And it worked!!  Mr. Bennett liked the idea so much he said they were going to start podcasts called "Ya pa' que?" w/BB overseeing something or other.  Russ- looking forward to working with you on that one.  Not only will the audience say #JUSOFONII but they'll learn alot on realife ways for healthier living.

What do y'all think?
Would you like to see these suggestions come to life?  How many would Tweety or Feibu about them if they did?

Bailando with Brands- go ahead, lead the dance once in awhile.

; )
