Today is Valentine’s Day, and seeing that children and books are two of BB’s biggest loves, figured it was a perfecto combinacion. The books shared here were given for review. Opinions are Babushka’s.

Children’s literature hoy en dia, today’s books are touching subjects Babushka doesn’t recall reading about when she was young. Not in the libros of that era, nor the ones BB read to The Trio. Subjects on selfworth, knowing family love, respeto,homelessness, muy importante and worthy of discussion. The following two books deal with some of these topics in engaging and endearing ways.

The primero es- 

"Have I Ever Told You? By Shani M. King and illustrated by Anna Horváth (January 2019; ISBN: 978-0884487197; Hardcover $14.95; Ages 5-6) offers "powerful words of love and encouragement...to children of all ages, races, religions, and walks of life...followed by character-building affirmations of dignity, respect, and value" (Foreword Review). What must be done Beautifuls is to share the love, and no better way than to read and show our little ones how. These two libros BB recommends de corazon- to the point that they're on Babushka's Amazon Associate List below.  Whether you buy or borrow from the library, read and relay the messages of Amor, porque it's never too early-or too late for stories of substance.

THT- Tallahassee Hispanic Theater- ESO!!! @TallyHispanicT #850Latinos

Y’all know Babushka is into The Arts, especially theater.  Cultivating cultura, especially when it’s not your typical mainstream type is one of BB’s amores.  As part of TWAM, Theater With a Mission, specializing in Spanish Golden Age plays and Palaver Tree Theater specializing in the history of community and opportunities for locals, Babushka thought that was about as diverse as North Florida was gonna get. Tallahassee Hispanic Theater, who’d of thunk it?  Bueno, BB’s amiga Alejandra did, and not only did she think about it, but she did it! Logro the dream of bringing modern plays written by Hispanic playwrights to Florida’s Capital. 

A little about Alejandra-
Alejandra Gutiérrez

“Alejandra has a PhD in Spanish. She also studied theater in Venezuela, and while going to graduate school, she was a member of the Spanish Theater Group at the University of Virginia. Since she moved to Tallahassee, she’s being working with Theater with a Mission, and recently with Polyphonic Bonsai. With Tallahassee Hispanic Theater she is turning one of her dreams into reality: creating a Hispanic Theater group in the US.”

And if you think this dream is only for the adult crowds, JU SO FONII!!!  Tallahassee Hispanic Theater has our hijos and futuro cultura very much al tanto.  Of course, to go to the future, one must know their past, so puppet shows of the classic, Don Quixote son perfecto.

And speaking of futures, Tallahassee Hispanic Theater just performed the first microtheater in North Florida.  Miami being the only other microtheater in the state, this is cosa grande, and as BB shared, BUENISIMO!!  Looking forward to next years offerings.

Alejandra shared, "We’ve been doing Hispanic plays in translation since 2016. The micro theater Festival idea occurred to me because it is a format very popular and successful in Spain and Latin America. Since it was during the summer we wanted to do something fun and fresh, so we added live music, food and drinks and we were really surprised with the response we got. People really enjoy the whole event and we hope to do it every summer. We will continue doing a play during the fall and spring. On November 9-10, 15-16 we’ll be presenting our next play “Idiots Contemplating the Snow”, by Alejandro Ricaño at the Monticello Opera House.

As you can well imagine, BB is very proud of Alejandra, THT- Tallahassee Hispanic Theater and all the actors and audiences who have become of part of this diversification of Tallahassee voices. Not only is the public being exposed to offerings from varied Hispanic authors, they’re beginning to realize that “Hispanic” encompasses many different types and countries. Ya Buena Hora y Al Fin!!

What is a 529 Savings Plan?

529 savings plans are named after section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code 26 U.S.C. § 529 and are designed to encourage saving for future higher education expenses of a designated beneficiary. Many states offer 529 savings plan options, including Florida Prepaid.

Money from a 529 plan can be used for tuition, fees, books, supplies and equipment required for study at any accredited college, university or vocational school in the United States and at some foreign universities. The money can also be used for room and board, as long as the fund beneficiary is at least a half-time student. Off-campus housing costs are covered up to the allowance for room and board that the college includes in its cost of attendance for federal financial-aid purposes. There is even an expansion that allows it to be used for K-12 educational expenses as well.

For the second year in a row, Babushka was honored to be named “a top Latino digital influencer” and is headed to the LATISM16 conference in Orlando this October. LATISM stands for” Latinos in Tech Innovation & Social Media and is a non-profit organization dedicated to the empowerment of the Latino community in the areas de educacion, health, technology y business through the use of Tech innovation and Social Media.” Their goal is to “share best practices,  reach Latino(a)s in the digital space, and  build the pipeline of  tech innovators.  Together we are igniting Latino(a)s to drive the innovation economy." And they are Beautifuls, they are!

The impact of Latinos, especially when banded together and highlighted is a bella and powerful thing.  Thanks to LATISM and other like minded organizations, Latinos are getting heard and paid attention to, but we need more of us to bring new ideas and insights, more potencia and potential, more volume to our voices. This is a particularly crucial time; this is the year politics is priming to either elevate or eradicate the Latino existence in our nation.  Join us in our rally for acknowledgement and advancement.

The holidays are here and the letters to Santi Clo have been sent.  A wonderful thing isn't it to see the faces of hope,expectation and joy in our childrens' eyes??  Will that expression still be there a week after? A month despues? In a year's time?? Quee?? Ok si, a bit of a downer, pero BB leave you like that?  JU SO FONII!!! You know Babushka better than eso. But first, a little historia...

Reading The Grands "what I want from Santa" list, BB couldn't help but remember standing in line for hours to get my son MAC the Power Rangers he had wanted. Got him the complete set. Only to have him sell them at a garage sale 2 years later for $20. Wow and woah. With time, we both have learned what a real gift is and how to value them. Now he's giving his unused portion of the Florida College Prepaid Plan to his son. Again, wow and woah.  Only this time, it's a positive thing.

Babushka has written before about the Florida College Prepaid Plan, how The Trio have used the plan, how it's saved us all headaches and heartaches by having it.  Hopefully The Grands won't have the headaches of student loan debt if BB has her say.  Isn't it wonderful that the opcion is open to us? 

Another option Babushka loves is the Florida 529 Savings Plan .  This is a plan that can be opened at anytime, for a student of any age, to be used in any US college or university.  BB would use this along side the Prepaid Plan to cover incidentals not cubierto (like extra food; abuela al fin). Matter of fact, wouldn't this look great in your child's stocking?

LATISM15 proposes to instruct top Latino Influencers on how to better organize and project their passions and beliefs and then introduce them to other influencers and lawmakers who can further their causes. This year Babushka was invited to attend as a Top Latina Influencer because of her #StopTheStigma campaign, a campaign hoping to address and eradicate the imensa ignorancia and taboo in our community when it comes to Mental illness. Like BB, influencers on all the above topics will attend to be instructed and guided.

This nation's capitol, our nation's capitol will be the school for over 50 Latino Influencers and a group of hispanic students for the Latino Youth Summit. The goal is to learn,share, and support each other as we strive to have our issues- LATINO issues focused on. LATISM is a group of Latinos who have worked and lobbied for our rights,advancements and inclusion for years. Babushka is humbled and honored to have been chosen, proving that one is never too old to dream and make a difference.

Felizmente BB had the foresight to matricular The Trio into the Florida College Prepaid program.  A member from the start, Babushka is so thankful she was able to- and still continues to be part of this great program. It's been more than 25 years andando. More than 1.6 million Prepaid Plans have been purchased and nearly 350,000 students have attended college using their Prepaid Plan. My Little One is currently using the plan BB had set up for her at birth, and my two eldest nietos have been set up with the plan also.  

Right now is open enrollment and the hora perfecto pa' empesar.  Now there are more options than when The Trio first started, and there's more help to choose which plans are better for your familia and your budget.  

"1-Year Florida University Plan:

o   Now there is a more affordable way to save for State University credit hours. Introducing the

new 1-Year Florida University Plan

o   You can purchase one year, or 30 credit hours, at a time according to your budget and

timeline, without feeling the pressure of having to buy all four years at once

o   The plan also allows multiple purchasers to buy a plan for the same child. So now you can

team up with other family members to help pay for your child’s higher education

 For example, let Grandma and Grandpa buy one year and you purchase another. A

Beautifuls, they ain't just whislin' La Guantanamera with these plans. Babushka's girls have used it to finish their education, and MAC will be using the unused portion of monies paid to apply it toward's his son's education. Y ahora tambien, they have something they call "Interactive Conversation" where they will help you learn more about the Prepaid Plans and the 529 Savings Plan. Es Cutisimo Y Buenisimo!!
