Hispanic Heritage and Thanksgiving. In Tallahassee They're One In The Same.

BB can hear y’all now.  “Hispanic Heritage Month was finished over a month ago. What do you mean it’s the same as Thanksgiving?” Dear Beautifuls, they’re both about being with familia and saying Gracias, no?? Also, if we go far enough in history, we were probably the first Europeans to have celebrated a “Thanksgiving” here in the US.  Pero Babushka is getting ahead of herself, primero let’s talk about this festival given by Hola Tallahasseee.

According to the US Census, in 2020 there were 13.2 thousand Hispanics in Tallahassee.

Wow and Woah. Betcha didn't think there were that many did you? Most are of Mexican descent, but there are many groups represented here, and being proud of our common language we wanted to share our heritage with everyone. First, the history of Hispanics in the US.

The pilgrims arrived on their rock in 1620, long after the 1539 arrival of Spain's

Hernando de Soto visit to La Florida. De Soto's visit was an early documented presence of Europeans to the US, one piece of history shared to visitors of the festival. Facts of Hispanic contributions to this country was highlighted throughout the festival. Here are some posters shown:

Isn’t that a bella sentimiento? Speaking of bella and Thanksgiving, let’s mention the people who without their beautiful sentimientos there would be no national day of thanks. A little known, very importante, well deserved recognition to a group of people BB admires very much-the  Indigenous American People.

Gracias to their kindness and guidance, the European settlers learned to farm the lands and find foods to eat.  Their generosity helped the strangers survive an unknown land. In thanks of a year of survival, a feast was held. And from this gesture of gratitude is based the American holiday of Thanksgiving.

To this punto Babushka wants to start her writing. Giving Thanks and being a Blessing to Others. If you have followed BB, you know her #GSOG postings. That stands for-

 #GigaSecond #Of #Gratitude. Just a momento of each dia to acknowledge a blessing experienced that day. Noon is the hour an alarm goes off en el celular to remind BB to stop, take a deep breath, and give gracias for what has passed that day. Sometimes the only thing that comes to mind is to give thanks for another day, and that’s a very important punto too.  If that’s the only thing you can think of to give gracias for, it’s not a bad one, not at all.  A quick, sincere blessing each day puts us in touch with the momento, the now of our vidas. With this #GSOG the daily correcorre of the day is stopped to remind us of a bigger reason. We are here blessed and to be a blessing for others. Si, you can be and are a blessing pa’ otros. Remember this, believe this, know this.  Your actions, your being, affects those around you, and that in turn affects those around them. We are all connected Beautifuls, here to share the blessings of this bella vida.

Hay dos major events that happen in Noviembre this year. El primero, Thanksgiving, Día de Acción de Gracias, is about being thankful, grateful, and feeling blessed. Ahora, eso si, aunque we should feel los tres, you realize there is a difference verdad?

To be thankful is el momento we think of who gave, what the gift is, y quien receives the gift. Nosotros somos the recipient and offer our thanks to the giver . El Diccionario Merriam-Webster defines thankful as “conscious of benefits received”. A conscious act from the person who received the benefits. For example, when someone opens or holds a door open for you, one should say “thank you”.  Aunque nowadays that is not at all common, so for Babushka that is in the Grateful banda. Grateful that there are still people who are courteous and conscious of others. And here’s the definicion of grateful.

Grateful is the feeling within, for something or someone which is not momentary, not necessarily action generated. So you say, pero BB, JU SO FONII! You just gave the example of someone opening the door for you as grateful, gratitude. Si, the accion of opening the door was momentary, but knowing that manners and caring of others still exists fills Babushka con long lasting felicidad y gratitud. Being grateful is also about appreciating what one has, as opposed to what one wants. To see the blessings of our lives is what gratitude encompasses. So, now, what is Blessed?

For many Blessed has religious connotations, pero for Babushka it is simply being conscious of your thankfulness and gratitude. To be aware of both and living daily in that awareness. In the American tradition, Thanksgiving came about when the Pilgrims celebrated their first successful corn harvest and invited their Native American allies. After all the hardships they endured, this truly did encompass being los tres, Thankful, Grateful, Blessed. And now BB writes on the second US November event that happened - Elections.

Whatever the outcome, whether it agreed with your wants or not, let us live the first part of this writing. In this difficult year of 2020, let us be Thankful for all the ways we had to vote; feel Grateful that the right to vote is ours, and know we are Blessed to live here. Beautifuls, let’s live November with this knowledge.

Back in July, Babushka attended the #Blogher15 Expo in New York. Wow and Woah. Como tenian booths!! Wonderful exhibits, sponsors, products, campaigns, all over the place! Todos muy nice, very interesante and entertaining, pero there was one in particular that BB just stood staring at... the Shark Cleaning booth. Limpiar? JU SO FONII!!! If you know BB, cleaning isn't one of her greatest passions, matter of fact, she doesn't do it at all. However, they were nice gente, so Babushka humored them by trying out their latest model, the Shark Rocket ® Powerhead . BUENISIMO!!  Light, purty and powerful, this is BB's take.

Pero we have to let the final user be the judge.  So they promised to send it to Sweetie.

Couldn't have asked for a better delivery date.  

Two days before Thanksgiving, and just as he was about to start cleaning for guests we got this beauty.

Had to remind him that brooms are good for getting things in upper corners like cobwebs and such, porque si no, out and ready for trash pickup that would have gone.

So now we're ready for our Thanksgiving guests with nice and clean floors, another thing we get to be thankful for.  Along with you Beautifuls. We're ALWAYS grateful each time you dance with Babushka.

Si, today is the first of December... where the heck did the year go? Bueno, if the last days of November are any indication of the coming holiday season, good thing there's vitamins, cafe, and lots of sales on chocolate!!

It was surprising that such a "big" city like Miami could still have a little town feeling. Local dignitaries, groups, bands, made a great point. No matter the size of your home town, we're all individuals with families, friends, and enjoy seeing them shine in events like these. Kinda makes you feel at home wherever you go.

As you well know, BB is always thankful for her familia and her profession-blogging. The chances Babushka can turn them into a Twofer the blessing is doubled. These double blessings make for lifelong memories, impressions, and lessons. I'm counting on this next adventure to be exactly that for La Princesa, my granddaughter. Because of her autism,she doesn't join us in many shows. We really don't know how she'll react to the loud noises and sudden movements. However, if there's one thing we do know is her love of music and dance. BB also knows that mi querida nieta has the "magic power" of killer memory and answering questions correctly w/the dialogue of a tv program or video she's seen, y that she also understands the essence of people and things. For this reason Babushka will take her to see Amaluna. Gracias to the kind folks of Cirque du Soleil, she will experience the joy of a live performance and hopefully the message of female vitality & empowerment.

Amaluna invites the audience to a mysterious island governed by Goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon. Their queen, Prospera, directs her daughter's coming-of-age ceremony in a rite that honors femininity, renewal, rebirth and balance which marks the passing of these insights and values from one generation to the next.

In the wake of a storm caused by Prospera, a group of young men washes ashore the island, triggering an epic and emotional story of love between Prospera's daughter and a brave young suitor. But theirs is a love that will be put to the test and the couple must face numerous demanding trials before they can achieve mutual trust, faith and harmony.

It's been 5 years... @HeartOfHaiti A reason for giving thanks, A reason for giving more.

This week we celebrate Thanksgiving here in the US, and Babushka is sooo very thankful to live in this country, be blessed with the people in my life, and the countless moments of abundance I've had. For that reason I have joined with Macy's in their Heart of Haiti program, to give back to those who haven't been as fortunate.

Five years ago this little girl was born and BB's world would never be the same.

Almost Five years ago Haiti was hit with a devastating earthquake, 

and their world would never be the same.

Like my granddaughter La Princesa, Haiti is also developing, learning to stand on its own. 

Pero tambien como mi nieta, like La Princesa, Haiti needs help in doing so.

Macy’s went to Haiti shortly after the January 12, 2010 earthquake and realized that despite the devastation there was an artist community that existed and was eager to bring their product to market. 

They launched a product line for sale at Macys.com and in stores (listed below) which to date has employed 400 artists. 

• Macy's Herald Square, Brooklyn Downtown, Metro Center, Chicago State Street, Northland Center, Seattle Downtown, Portland Downtown, San Francisco Union Square, Biltmore Fashion Park, South Coast Plaza Home, Mission Valley Home, Dallas Galleria, Lenox Square Mall, and Dadeland Mall. 

 When you employ one artist in Haiti, the entire community benefits. Over 500 artists employed benefitting over 3,000 members of their extended family.

To put this into perspective, the average Haitian’s annual income is only $400 – for a year!  Add to that, Haiti has an estimated 400,000 artisans (out of a 10M population) who rely solely on their handcrafted goods as a source of income. No other sector of employment even approaches such numbers.

Macy’s paved the way in helping to rebuild this important sector of the fragile economy. 

The paper mache technique - practiced by many Haitian artisans - involves sourcing old, cement bags - or other paper products - to tear apart and re-purpose with glue and paint to create this unique piece. 

The blue circle vase - made in Jacmel - is hand-painted and includes a glass insert for functionality. 

Babushka was given the Blue Circle vase to show and share here, and to say it is stunning is an understatement. The quality is buenisimo, the colors rich and bold. A treasure to wake to every morning; it's a true work of art in my bedroom. Quee?? Ok si, JU SO FONII, BB's a work of art too. Actually, as I said in the Oprah post, this vase reminds me of all the beauty in the world, and how Babushka can play a very important part in it.

And you My Beautifuls can be a very big part of it too.

When thinking of gifts, think of giving gifts that help others, especially those in need. 

Give gifts that give hope, a sustainable income to Haitian artisans.

 Giving back and paying forward is the way to start this Thanksgiving and holiday season.
