God's Wicked Sense of Humor and Life Lessons with a Smile. @Courage_Cancer - Courage4Cristyl

HolaHolaHola Beautifuls!

Mira que somos cabeziduros; humans are hard headed. And God has a wicked sense of humor. We go around doing what we want, focusing on our wants without realizing what we truly need or worse yet, what we already have. We may get reminders to look, episodes of life that make us stop for a moment, but those are fleeting and quickly pass. A child’s birth, reunions with an old friend, life moments that spark the love of life in us. Unfortunately we tend to focus on the mundane and insignificant, because as BB said before, we are hard headed. Fortunately we are given many nudges along the way to focus on what’s truly worthy; sometimes those nudges become slams.

My eldest, Cristyl’s Corazon has  stage 2 breast cancer. At 33 years of age she is facing her mortality. Now before you start feeling sorry for her, let Babushka show you the blessing of this.

Nothing makes you reevaluate your life attitude and actions quicker than the threat of losing it. For years she has refused to seek medical help for depression, for years she has been in a relationship that constricted, not daring to follow her true fullfillment of self. No more. Gracias to that golf ball size lump, she is happier than she’s been for years. She’s tending to her physical, spiritual and emotional self. With therapy and medicines she’s mentally in a much better place. With renewed and real faith she is content and feeling purpose, ready to conquer all. She’s following life loves and goals. Que te dije? Wicked sense of humor.

At this stage of life BB has become a fulltime madre again. Blessed Be. The first time around BB didn’t spend much time focusing on my first born because she was perfecta. Good grades, bella ballerina, popular, Babushka mistakenly thought she didn’t need a mama’s hovering and constant attention. The first time around she left home as soon as legally possible. This is our chance to makeup for missed moments. Not quite the same, but on many levels so much better.

Mama_Babushka_Cristyl_Cancer

Life now is for living and following ones heart. Being older has helped her realize what is truly in her heart and who should be there. She has found a stronger love of family and her family in God. Her vision is to start a dance ministry, to combine two of her major loves. This is her first performance where she shared that dream.

Gracias to many she continues finding more ways to give and to live. One of these inspirations is from a book her therapist suggested , Living with Cancer by Barbara K. Linton. Gran casualidad that Barbara lives in Tallahassee? Again, Wicked Sense of Humor. Thanks to this book Cristyl found answers and strength. On the back cover, “Linton’s story promises that if you let Him, God will stay right beside you, loving you and willing to give you strength to walk triumphantly through whatever life may bring your way. It won’t be an easy journey, but if you let Him, God will prove that even with cancer...you can live!” Not only is BB’s Baby living, but she’s living for others too.,
For our children we are capaz to do anything. Even physical labor, in the sun. Babushka has signed up to walk on Cristyl's team and hopes y'all can join us. We'd love to have you there or/and donate for this wonderful cause.  The link for her walk page is http://bit.ly/BBCourage4Cristyl.  We would love to raise at least $100 to help buy supplies for the many projects Cancer Through Courage has.

So, are we feliz that we've had to come to this point to realize what's lifes point?  Por supuesto que no, wouldn't wish it on anyone. PERO knowing what's really valuable, THAT we wish for TODOS.

Y remember daily with a knowing sonrisa the motto, now mantra,

Life- JU SO FONII!!

BB Found Her Voice and is Telling Her Story. #StopTheStigma

BB's brought you the story of advocacy, the story of global responsibility, and now it's Babushka's story that you will read. Queeee??? JU SO FONII!!! Of course I wrote the other stories and shared them through my eyes, but this one My Beautifuls is a very real and personal tale that affected BB and her family directly, and unfortunately it's not so fonii.  On the final day of the Further with Ford Conference I needed to change my arrival flight from Tallahassee to South Florida; my daughter was in the hospital, and I needed to sign the admittance papers. On June 28 my daughter was admitted into a hospital, catatonic and psychotic; she was put into a public psych ward two days later.  The official diagnosis- Stress related severe depression.

No words can describe the terror of looking into your child's eyes and seeing nothing there.  No way to contact and penetrate that being who was a part of you before birth, loved sight unseen, who now saw nothing. Nothing but a world she mumbled about in bursts of fear, shivering and then shutting down.  The helplessness was almost BB's breaking point but I knew I had to find help, first for my loved one, then for the rest of us following her. I needed instruction on what to expect, what I could do to help her- now in the hospital and then once she left.  Unfortunately no one wanted to share any information.  It was at this low that I found an ever lower truth- the taboo of mental illness.  No one came forth to help, no suggestions, no recommendations, nada.  In a culture that's all about family, solidarity, opinions and being vocal, the silence was permanent in the latino corner.  Through a friend in Crawfordville I was able to contact that local NAMI (National Alliance Mental Illness) chapter, who then helped me find help in Miami.

BB's forever grateful for the NAMI Wakulla group and forever changed by the incident.  Gracias a Dios my child was released after three weeks in the ward, but obviously nothing will ever be the same.  Babushka will never forget the frustration felt and never wants another mother to go through the same nightmare.  I have started a campaign because it's time to end the taboo, time to #StopTheStigma.  Mental Illness is just that, an illness.  Like the diseases of cancer and diabetes, awareness and education on mental illness are vital.

A video by the National Hispanic Medical Association, American Psychiatric Association, League of Latin American Citizens, with a very special speaker, Dr. Antonia Novello- the first woman and the first Hispanic to become Surgeon General of the United States.

Awareness and education, but above all, letting them know they are loved.

Let's share our stories, erase the shame, and #StopTheStigma.

Babushka Besos a todos. Cuidensen.

P.S. If you’d like to help the #StopTheStigma campaign directly,  I have signed up for the Broward County NAMI walkathon and am trying to put a team together to raise funds and awareness. Any donations, be it monetary, sponsorships, or walking with my team Nunca Alone, is very, very appreciated.

La Tata & the UHF America’s Health Rankings Senior Report

*This is part of a sponsored campaign with Latina Mom Bloggers and United Health Foundation, pero como siempre- as always, the story and expressed opinions are BB's.

HolaHolaHola My Beautifuls!

Do you remember my post about the S Sisters? Bueno, they've once again danced into BB's life joining my grandmother, La Tata and my Hispanicize friends United Health Care .  Thankfully she's back home and for being 90 or 92 she's doing remarkably well, however the scare did prompt me to read the UHF America's Health Rankings Senior Report more diligently than I would have otherwise and I found many points in it valid and part of our daily lives with La Tata. Go ahead and click on the link- excellent information in there.

In the report they mention tobacco use, inactivity, alcohol consumption, and poor diet, as some of the contributing factors in bad health in seniors.  Here we are lucky, La Tata rarely smoked, and though she does like her wine from time to time and I have to challenge her to walk a little more, as I mentioned, she's remarkably well for her age, and as far as poor diet... please, she's Cubana.  So on those counts we're doing well. There is one area however where Babushka must battle daily with her, and it's one topic Latinos don't speak of too often and I think that may be part of the problem.

Having been one of 12 children, an entrepreneur, a world traveler, La Tata was not ready to live a slower and more isolated life.  As in most modern households, everyone has work or studies outside the home and La Tata would find herself alone for more hours as the years went by; she fell into a heavy depression.  To say BB was scared and saddened when I saw her like this a year ago is an understatement.  It's not age that makes the old act old, it's the frustration of not being able to do what they used to do, which then turns to feelings of helplessness and being unneeded.  They lose social contact because of embarassment - in La Tata's case she doesn't like to go to parties because she wouldn't want to show up in "old lady shoes" which are the only ones that she's comfortable in.  How do we combat this?

As a family we make sure to call her daily, visit at least weekly, and make sure she knows she's still a very valued and special part of our lives.  Of course having the great, great grandchildren give her giant hugs and kisses over the phone lights up her disposition instantly.

Taking her out works wonders too.
Nobody likes to be cooped up in the house all the time and in La Tata's case, the louder and more festive the place, the better it is.
For some unexplicable reason she's always in better spirits and health when she's "de Farandula".

Cuba Nostalgia- she ♥♥♥ this!

Special Occasions
Memorial Day & with her son going out to eat for her birthday

Let them Lead and be who they used to be.

La Tata leading the way to do some grocery shopping,
getting a perm and then her nails done.

Make sure they laugh at least one good belly laugh a day.

How'd you think I came up with JU SO FONII !!!??

Show them they're needed, vital and still useful.

La Tata will show me how to play Spanish Cards and help me w/my Spanish whilst I read outloud.
Note: To counteract all the news, programas escandalosas, y novelas, I pick a book with positive affirmations/messages.

But most of all, show them they are loved and not alone.

Rinquincaya "loaning" his best friend to La Tata so she wouldn't have to be alone and afraid in the hospital.

From the report:  "Older Hispanics (28.2%) were less likely to rate their health as excellent or very good than were older Whites (42.8%) or Older Asians (35.3%)

Hispanic older adults are expected to become the largest/ethnic minority of those aged 65 or older by 2019.

Now is a critical time to study senior health at the population level because we know that America's senior population will grow by more than 50% in the next 15 years and that Americans are living longer but sicker lives."

Bueno, I don't know about the stats, or the other Older Hispanics, but if La Tata lives to 2019 we will be blessed, and if she lives another 15 years-
Babushka's bottling up her DNA!!

; )

Enjoy your elders now, help them and you live longer, more productive and enjoyable lives.
The memories & love never grow old.

Even BB Gets the Blues

HolaHolaHola My Beautifuls!!  Sorry I skipped Saturday's post- I really didn't feel like posting.  And since this baile and BB are all about following our hearts... actually, it wasn't my heart not being into it - it was more like being too into it.  I'm overwhelmed. Quee? JU SO FONII!!! Ok si, the overwhelmer had met her match.  So I did what any self respecting go getter would do. I had a piece of chocolate and went to bed.  Whaatt??  I didn't want to wake up groggy!

So what started this un BB like spin?  Well, first of all I lost my iPod touch on the bus. With all my pics of the grandbabies. Then once I got back Up North in The South I entered to find my place in need of... oh so many things.  You know the saying "There's no place like home."? They ain't just whistlin' La Guantanamera with that one. Hopefully there's no place like Babushka's. This is what was waiting at Babushka's home.

I know Babushka's not the only one who's kitchen table looks like this... right?

Actually the kitchen sink wasn't that bad when I arrived, but due to some unforseen leaky- shower -faucet- repair- gone- wrong- now- leaking -behind tub -walls -and -into- the -bedroom, we've had to shut the water off.  The picture is 3 days accumulation.  And speaking of bedroom-

Office side, bed side, walk in (more like tiptoe in- only 3 ft) closet

Hace tiempo, it's been awhile since it went from Eclectic to Eek!

Site of my future home office. For now, it's just a sight!

::sigh::

So how do YOU chase away the blues?

Babushka finds solace in song, in finding stories of inner strength, of dreams not yet diminished.
In other words, I spent hours on YouTube.

Queen Emily David- ya gotta be grovin' with this one!

Listening to your inner voice, being true to yourself and having the courage to say "this is me- ALL of me".   Andrew de Leon

Alice Tan Ridley, 58 and still following her dreams after 20 years.

You're feeling better now too verdad?

It also helps to know you're not alone; the angels made sure I saw posts sharing my current blah sentiments.  Two of the best were Mami Holistica's   marvelous list of blues breakers (it's in Spanish, but sooo worth the translating effort) and my dear friend Carrie's article on the TikiTiki Blog.  Carrie's another fluent Spanglish Speaker, baby boomer who wrote about this in December.  P.S.  So sorry mujer that I'm getting to it Cubantime, but I guess it's true what they say.  "The teacher will appear when the student is ready." Maybe for us self taught people it's "posts will appear when the baile is the blues."  But you know what also will appear for sure when the Cuban Conundrum of the Moco Caido aka sad/sadness/blues appears?  What else, but

COMIDA!!!

I see you- don't deny it.  You're smiling and salivating at this very moment.

My weapon of choice this day is a sundae of banana split ice cream with nutella, sprinkles, and strawberries.
This is Babushka's plate of perkiness and it's even good for me too.
Calcium and fruit requirement met for the day.
Vitamin packed.

ESO!!!

Gracias for bailando Babushka's Blues.
BB's feeling much better now that you've danced with me.
Pero porsea- but just to make sure of no relapses, I think I'm gonna go double up on my vitamins.

; )
